Our City's History

Toronto's history is deeply rooted in its strategic location at the entrance of a major route used by the Huron, Iroquois, and Ojibwe peoples, with archaeological evidence showing human activity dating back thousands of years.

In the 1660s, the Iroquois established villages within modern-day Toronto, but by 1701, the Mississaugas had taken over the area after the Iroquois left due to the Beaver Wars. The French then founded Fort Rouillé in 1750, but it was abandoned in 1759 during the Seven Years' War. After the British victory, the area became part of Quebec in 1763.

The American Revolutionary War saw an influx of British settlers, known as United Empire Loyalists, who were granted land in the area. In 1787, a significant land purchase from the Mississaugas led to the naming of Toronto and the eventual establishment of York by Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1793, who saw it as a safer capital for Upper Canada than Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Despite being captured and plundered by U.S. forces in 1813 during the War of 1812, York was incorporated as the City of Toronto in 1834, adopting its Indigenous name and becoming a pivotal location in Canadian history.
